How to Add Safety Planes to a Universal Robot

How to Create Safety Planes in UR

In this how to you will learn how to program virtual safety planes that will act as physical boundaries for the robot

Introduction

Safety planes are a very helpful feature for setting boundaries of the robot arm. When the arm is in a confined space space or working with a person nearby, setting a physical boundary prevents accidents or unwanted movement. Here is how to setup up safety planes.

Setup

Go to:

  • Installation > Features > setup planes and/or points of coordinates that you want as limits (top, left, right, front side)
  • After creating these coordinates you will create the safety planes > Installation > Safety > Planes
  • Add plane 1 (up to 8 planes)
  • Properties > create logical name > select a coordinate in ‘Copy Feature’ drop-down menu > Choose restriction type (Normal and/or Reduced)
  • Repeat this setup for all the necessary safety planes you want
  • Adjust plane displacement if needed, then confirm the parameters.

Safety boundaries help prevent the robot from breaching set limits or entering reduced safety modes. For details, check the Universal Robots guide
